The controlled burning of natural gas in the world’s oilfields, and its alarming rise in recent years, has caught the attention of industry and public alike.
The World Bank-led Global Gas Flaring Reduction partnership estimates that approximately 140 billion cubic metres of gas is flared annually in the world — enough to produce 750 billion kWh of power, or more than the continent of Africa’s power use in a year. It’s also means more than 350 million tonnes of carbon dioxide is emitted annually — the equivalent of about 77 million cars.
